The all-new Flex is Ford's largest crossover yet. This highly-anticipated retro-styled SUV has generated plenty of positive press since it began making the rounds at auto shows as the Fairlane concept in 2005. Even so, stiff competition puts its overall ranking in the bottom half of its class.
The production model Flex keeps many of the Fairlane's styling cues, though it loses some features reviewers loved, such as rear-opening suicide doors and the retro name. Still, initial test drives prove that the Flex is a great alternative for families who want minivan features but not minivan styling. "Overall, the Flex is an impressive package," says Automobile Magazine. "It takes the quirky, modern designs of the Mini Cooper and Scion xB, then manages to squeeze six or seven people (two interiors will be offered) inside the thing with nearly endless headroom." The Flex is the first Ford vehicle to feature the new capless fuel-filler system.
The Flex comes standard with front-wheel drive, while the higher trim levels have optional all-wheel drive. It's available in several trims -- the base SE, SEL, and top-of-the-line Limited.

Reviewers praise the Flex's powerful V6 engine and smooth ride. However, the driving experience is a bit too predictable for most test drivers and leaves something to be desired. "In overall performance, the Flex is surprise-free, and if it's not terribly exciting, it is certainly more than amply powerful and quiet," says The Car Connection. Auto writers are nearly unanimous in their praise for the 2009 Ford Flex's looks, and are especially appreciative of its distinctive design. "This is a vehicle whose looks we get excited about," says Car and Driver. "A nearly perfect doppelgänger for the Fairlane concept shown at the Detroit show in 2005, the Flex sits ramrod upright, with four strakes along its flanks, tinted glass all around, and a body-color top or a Mini-esque contrasting top that will be available in white or silver." The 2009 Ford Flex can seat up to seven in a versatile interior that ranks near the top of its class. Standout features are its flat-folding seats, spacious third row, and long list of options. Automobile Magazine reports, "As far as buzz-inspiring features go (it wouldn't be a new American car without at least three,) Ford's Sync system leads off the list, offering Bluetooth, a music-holding hard drive, and voice recognition software. In six-passenger versions, a refrigerator will be offered between the second row captain's chairs."
